Dyspareunia and sexual dysfunction during postpartum period and related factors: The longitudinal study

The aim of the study was to investigate dyspareunia and sexual dysfunction during postpartum period and related factors. Between June 2014 and June 2015, 220 women have lived in Manisa, Turkey, were enrolled in the longitudinal study. Dyspareunia and sexual dysfunction were evaluated at with face to face interview at 3th month postpartum and again at 6th and 9th months of postpartum via telephone. Sexual problems were assessed using Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX). The prevalence of dyspareunia during pregnancy, at 3, 6 and 9th months postpartum were 11.8%, 31.8%, 10.5% and 1.8%, respectively. According to ASEX, the total score was ≥ 11 in 87.3%, 66.8% and 48.6% of women 3, 6 and 9th months after delivery. In the regression analysis at three  months after delivery, women who thought their knowledge about sexuality insufficient, at sixth month women who had an arranged marriage, who had vaginal delivery and women who thought their knowledge about sexuality insufficient, at ninth month multiparous women and women who thought their knowledge about sexuality insufficient had sexual dysfunction. Counseling of women about sexuality after childbirth is important for determining sexual problems and developing women’s quality of life.
